For Advanced Law Students and Professionals | The International Arbitration Training Course, offered by Leiden Law School in cooperation with the Permanent Court of Arbitration, focuses on the theory and practice of international arbitration as a distinct field of the law and field of legal practice. It covers international commercial arbitration, investment treaty arbitration and inter-state arbitration.

Course information

The fourth edition of the International Arbitration Training Course will take place in The Hague from 1 to 5 July 2019. 

Target Audience
The course is targeted towards practitioners who seek to enlarge their vision or discover a new field of practice, and scholars seeking to gain expertise in the application of concepts and norms within the field of international arbitration. Advanced law students, researchers and professionals with a demonstrated interest in the topic are invited to apply.

Academic Content
Besides a general course on the principles and practice of international arbitration, the programme offers several thematic courses on certain aspects of international arbitration, such as recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards and institutional arbitration, as well as area-specific courses.The programme for the 2019 edition will be made public soon.

Class size 
To ensure active participation and exchange with teaching staff and fellow participants, a maximum of 40 participants will be admitted to this course.

Course fees
The tuition fee for the 2019 session is €950. Unfortunately, there are no scholarships available for this course.

What's included?
The fee includes access to the course materials, a certificate of participation, a guided tour of the Peace Palace (subject to availability), lunches and refreshments on class days, a course dinner and a drinks reception.

The Grotius Centre does not provide housing but we will be happy to assist you in finding a suitable place to stay. Here are some options for accommodation in The Hague.

The application should be completed at once as data cannot be saved. Therefore, make sure to have the following documents ready before starting the application:

1. A copy of your curriculum vitae;
2. A cover letter (one page) in which you clearly explain why you are applying for this course;
3. A recent portrait picture.

Please note that:

  • Prior knowledge of arbitration is desirable.
  • All courses are taught in English. An official certificate of language proficiency is not required but you need to be fluent in English to be able to understand the classes and to interact with fellow students.
  • Only complete applications are considered.
  • All applications are dealt with on an individual basis.
  • Provided you are considered eligible, you will receive a pre-admission email.
  • Your admission to the course will be final once the payment of the fee is made.
  • The deadline for application is 1 May 2019. Applications that are received afterwards will still be considered, but admission will depend on the availability of places. Applications will be admitted on a rolling basis. Early application is strongly advised.
